Homeschooling possibly illegal in CA

I normally do not talk about politics and such on my blog, but there is some Fucked Up Shit happening in California regarding parents freedom to homeschool. If you have read my blog for any length of time y'all know I homeschool my kids, always have, always will. Even though I do not live in CA, this is an issues that could possibly affect my children in the future. If you have a minute, please take the time to sign the petition to have the state Supreme Court to "depublish" the case, which means to apply the case to the family involved — not to all California families.

Thanks Y'all!

OMGosh, that's crazy! I don't homeschool, but I respect & admire those who can (I just can't deal, lol). I'll definitely sign the petition.

My two older sister's both home schooled their kids. All of them have gone to college and are smart, fun, happy people. I will support you and all others that choose this path.

I'm just a knitting lurker, but since you put it out there, I'll offer my opinion: I'm not sure how I feel about this. However, I do think it's valid to ask parents to have some training if they're going to be teaching their children. I don't want to sound catty, but as a (certified) English teacher, the number of grammatical errors in your post would make me wonder how qualified you are to teach English. Likewise, I would admit that I am not qualified to teach science or math to anyone, even elementary schoolers. It would seem to me that if parents don't have to be certified, then maybe teachers shouldn't have to go through years of training, either.

Amanda,

I will sign the petition. I don't understand why a parent needs to be certified. The teachers in D.C. and in America are certified and they are NOT doing a great job. So if we are going on certification DAMN.

Well do you think that Bill Gates should be qualified to teach computer science? Or Colin Powell teach military history? Or Stephen King creative writing? None of these folks would be deemed qualified under this new ruling. The judge who filed this opinion has his head up his ass, or up the teachers union's ass more accurately.

"It would seem to me that if parents don't have to be certified, then maybe teachers shouldn't have to go through years of training, either."

I am responsible for the education of my children. You have a JOB and are responsible for teaching the children of others. I KNOW I am qualified, those parents use your certification to reassure themselves that you are qualified. And then hope you won't have sex with their kids.

The Gaming One

P.S. Was that catty?

I signed the petition. I don't home school my kids but I don't like the public school system either. So my kids are in a wonderful Charter School that has great testing scores and teachers who not only follow the curriculum required by CA but whom can also add things the the curriculum to enhance the children's learning.

My kids have had great public school teachers when my kids were there and a couple really shitty ones. When my children went into the charter school system they were WAY behind and had to work to catch up. They are getting a better education now.

I think parents have the right to choose if they want to put their children in public schools - especially with the problems that are being seen in them right now. CA has one of the worst public school systems now! I also don't think all parents would be qualified to home teach but my guess would be that the ones who want to do so probably are qualified because they have major concerns about their children's education.

Thanks for putting this out there. It deserves attention.

Terribly horrid what they're doing to our future out here, I knew of the court hearing, but not the petition, thank you. I've signed it and sent it on to others. My husband and I are planning on homeschool. If only you knew just how terrible our schools are out here....
